HERE'S THE LUCID GRAVITY SUV DOING ON-ROAD TESTING

Since the automaker first showed off the electric SUV back in November of last year, fans have been patiently waiting for updates regarding the Lucid Gravity. It shouldn’t be much longer now before we learn everything we want to know about the handsome seven-seater, as Lucid Motors announced Tuesday that the EV SUV has entered on-road development testing.

Despite sharing info on the EV SUV's late-game development testing, Lucid apparently isn't quite ready to share any more specifics about the truck. All the automaker has really said at this point is that the SUV will seat seven, should bring driving dynamics similar to a sports car, and provide the most range of any electric SUV on sale. Lucid is being so secretive that it actually recovered the Gravity SUV in camouflaging wrap, despite the fact that fans have already seen the truck in the metal.

Though the automaker is mostly quiet on specs, we expect that the Gravity will utilize a similar electric powertrain configuration as the brand’s Air Sedan lineup. This would mean customers will have a choice between single, dual, or tri-motor setups, which will come backed by either an 88-kWh or 118-kWh battery pack. In Air form, those powertrains provide between 480 and 1200 hp. As far as range is concerned, you can expect figures to exceed the 348-mile rating exercised by the Tesla Model X SUV. Lucid has also confirmed the Gravity will benefit from a newer version of the brand’s UX and software, as well as a refined cockpit with new high-resolution displays abound.

Regardless of how impressive the Lucid Air sedans truly are, the Gravity is going to be a major player in the brand’s success. SUVs continue to dominate the market here in the United States, a trend that isn’t expected to slow down as we transition to electric power. Turning the Gravity into a volume seller will be key to Lucid establishing itself as a genuine competitor to more established luxury brands like Tesla or Mercedes-Benz. The sooner Lucid is able to do that the better, as the brand has already faced some difficult challenges so far in 2023. Reuters reported a healthy drop in share prices during the first quarter of this year, which came as the result of Lucid announcing lower targeted production volumes than anticipated. The brand also laid off some 1300 employees just last month, according to CNBC, which caused a bit of a stock price plunge as well. If the Gravity is as impressive as the automaker is saying, it should have no problem turning things around.
